Questions:
What or who inspired you to pursue music? My mother who got me started along with my teachers John Staud, Jimmy Henderson, Roland Hanna, and various musician mentors.
Most unusual or memorable gig you’ve ever played (include a few details why): Back in the 70’s and my early years of playing, I was called to play with the band backing up the Glenn Miller singer, Ray Eberle, for a dinner and concert dance in the Ocean City, MD Convention Center. For the concert, the band had charts to read so that part was pretty easy. Ray was one of the strongest professional singers I had accompanied; he was magnificent. After the hour concert and break, we came back from break to play the first dance set. Ray had us pull up three charts. After that Ray walked over to me and said, “Let’s do something with just the rhythm section.” Scared out of my wits I asked, “What would you like to do?” He looked me over as a very young guy like he was wondering how much I knew. He said, “Do you know Where or When?” I said, “What key?” He told me and off we went. After that, he never asked. He just called tunes and keys for the next two hours. I’ll never forget it.
Musician/celebrity/historical person you’d most like to have dinner with (living or deceased): Jelly Roll Morton who is considered the father of jazz. (I own Jelly Roll’s Steinway piano)
Last book you read: 23 Minutes in Hell by Bill Wiese
What CD/tape/music is in your car/home stereo right now? Brooklyn Tab
Favorite movie: Casablanca (Not for the love story but I love that club)
“If I didn’t perform music, I would . . . “ Teach college mathematics
"I’d sell my soul for . . ." Nothing. I love my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
